The Four Noble Truths, which Buddha taught
Taught by Lord Buddha in His First Sermon at Sarnath
The Four Noble Truths form the foundation of Buddha's teachings. They explain the reality of life, the reason for human suffering, and how to overcome it to achieve peace and happiness (Nirvana).
1. Dukkha — The Truth of Suffering
→ “Life is full of suffering.”
Birth, aging, illness, death, sadness, disappointments, and all forms of pain are part of life.
2. Samudaya — The Truth of the Cause of Suffering
→ “Desire and attachment cause suffering.”
Greed, desire, anger, jealousy, ego, and attachment to worldly things lead to pain.
3. Nirodha — The Truth of the End of Suffering
→ “Ending desire ends suffering.”
If we can overcome desires and attachments, we can end suffering and find inner peace.4. Magga — The Truth of the Path to End Suffering
→ “Follow the Noble Eightfold Path.”
Lord Buddha showed the way to end suffering through right living, right thinking, and right actions — known as The Eightfold Path.
